The success of Ford's Fairlane prompted GM to redesign many of their compact cars to intermediate size, including the Pontiac Tempest. Then John DeLorean challenged his engineers to raid the existing parts bins to create a performance car out of the Tempest. The Tempest GTO became the first true muscle car, and soon reached legendary status. All GTOs from this era are collectible, with convertibles and Tri-Power cars worth the most. These cars can be easily forged, so get expert advice before buying. Body styles include a hardtop, coupe, and convertible - all with 2 doors. Engine options include a 389 or 400 cubic inch Pontiac V8, with a 2 or 3-speed automatic or 3 or 4-speed manual transmission. Expect to pay between $20,000 and $50,000 for a genuine excellent condition GTO of this era.
